At first I thought this was going to be just another run-of-the-mill book about semi-humorous baseball stories. Then I hit his recounting of a "safe" call he made at first base that got manager Billy Martin out of the dugout. That call and its ramifications goes on for two pages and is the best baseball story I've ever read. He must have used it on the banquet circuit for years in order to get it tuned and phrased just right. That story alone is worth the price of this book if you love baseball.

I love Ron Luciano's books. This book came very quickly in the mail and was not a disapointment.
Good book
Even though it was written years ago it is still a very funny book.I would recommend it to all baseball fans of any age.
This is, hands down, the funniest baseball book I've ever read. No, make that the funniest book I've ever read, no matter what topic! I can't ever recall any other book in which I had to stop reading every page or two to wipe my eyes, I had been laughing so hard.

I really don't know if Luciano was an umpire first, or a comedian. He probably was better at being the latter. I'm sure a lot of managers, led by Baltimore's Earl Weaver, would agree with that.....but Luciano knew his baseball, was a decent ump and brought entertainment to the sport like nobody before or since. Name one other umpire who brought laughs and fun to the park like Luciano? Nobody.....and he's missed.

This is one of the fastest reads you'll ever get in a book and baseball fans, in particular, should really love reading this, especially if you watched baseball in the era Luciano umpired.
I had a close encounter with Ron Luciano in the summer of 1978. It was raining, and I was running in from the parking lot of a K-Mart in Arlington, TX. As I reached the smooth concrete surface of the entrance to K-Mart, my feet slipped out from under me, and I hit the pavement on my backside, sliding several feet. Ron Luciano, standing beside where I bruised my pride, spread his arms in the gesture for a call at home plate, and yelled, "Safe!" This book really shows the great sense of humor Luciano had and displayed to those around him. The American League is much sadder with his passing in the '90's.
I learn so much from a good autobiography and this and his other book, "Strike Two," are both excellent. The baseball stories, the humor, and the personalities are priceless and memorable!
