When Dempsey Killebrew's boss is implicated in a bribery scandal involving a prominent politician, it looks as if Dempsey's career in DC is toast. With no job and no money (not to mention no prospects), Dempsey is forced to ask her father to lend a hand. Mitch refuses Dempsey's request for a loan, but he does have a proposition for her: head down to Guthrie, Georgia and see to some property that he's inherited from a distant relative. With only a vague image of a genteel southern plantation house in need of a little sprucing up, Dempsey gets quite a shock when she actually lays eyes on "Birdsong" - the place is a disaster. From the Pepto-Bismol pink paint to the rotting roof, there's nothing "genteel" about this dump. Add to that an elderly woman who refuses to vacate and two FBI agents breathing down her neck, and it looks like Dempsey's stay in Guthrie should be pretty...interesting.
This was a really fun story and I enjoyed it so much. The author created an endearing cast of characters that came to life on the page. The people that Dempsey meets in Guthrie, from the charming father and son lawyers to the cantankerous "squatter", are engaging and vividly drawn. The dialog had such a natural feel to it that I could easily get lost in the story and I loved the conversations that Dempsey would have with people that she randomly encountered in Guthrie. I was leery that this would be one of those stories where the prickly "city girl" get her pre-conceived notions about small-town "hicks" handed to her on a platter, but happily this story is far more nuanced than that hoary old trope. Great characterization, strong dialog, an interesting storyline...I wish every book I picked up had writing this smooth and professional!
One thing you should know (because this may be a deal breaker for you), is that there is a lot of detail about home renovation. As Dempsey takes on the Herculean task of rehabbing "Birdsong", there's quite a bit of information about remodeling an ancient kitchen, salvaging furniture...that type of thing. Now I enjoyed that, but I'm an HGTV fiend - I love me some "Real Estate Porn"! If that is not your thing you might find yourself getting a bit bored in places - just something to consider.
There's a little bit of a romance for Dempsey, but it doesn't really dominate the storyline. I'd probably label this as "Chic Lit" with a Southern accent and a touch of HGTV thrown in for good measure.
Occasional strong language and some mild (non-explicit) sexual content.

Mary Kay Andrews is simply my favorite chick-lit writer. Yeah, you know the outcome pretty quickly but I like that her books are about family and friends who have your back, they're not stupid, her heroines work hard, and they're just plain fun books to read. She also gets the Southern "stuff" right. This raised in the South woman knows the difference.
A legal thriller with some Home Improvement mixed in. Dempsey gets caught up in her bosses scandal and ends up in Georgia renovating her Dad's family home. There are conflict and mystery with "family", FBI, and a host of well-meaning town folk. It is funny, heartwrenching and exciting. Good read. This is my first book by MKA and was chosen by my book club, but it won't be my last.
Not my usual fare, not a mystery or history but a good read nonetheless. A young woman gets used by a D.C. President of a PR firm for which she works to help get a Congressman to vote a certain way. All the “entertainment” is charged to the firm’s credit card account issued in the young woman’s name, Dempsey Killebrew. It gets better when she is fired by the Secretary of the firm after the long weekend in the Bahamas with the Congressman and her Boss. She is naive and was not involved in any wrongdoing but she has to leave D.C. to go to her father’s old house in a backwater town in GA to get the neglected house updated to sell for her Dad. Lots of wonderful people, an 80+ year old in the house and a dog named Shorty meet Dempsey too, her new lawyer, his son, plus the FBI. Read the book.
I am a fan of Mary Kay Andres novels and knew this one was going to be special from the start. I was really transported to Guthrie, Georgia and felt as I was right there fixing up the house with Dempsey. It was quickly my favorite book by her and I spent hours each night reading it, excited to see how these wonderful characters would develop. Then, the book ended in the middle. The house never got finished, there was no clear, cut and dry ending, characters had dropped off the face of the planet, and you were left to assume a lot. Also, after all the research that was done on the FBI, it was all thrown out the window in the last line of the book, as it may have been the most ridiculous, illegal thing I've heard. At first I thought there was a sequel because of the way it ended, but sadly, no. I felt as if she got halfway through the book and decided she didn't want to finish it, so she spent the last twenty five pages just trying to get it over with.
